Fawn, Tori, and I have decided to do our first gaming convention. Sure, IGF submissions are closing October 2nd, but we wanted to go for something smaller and more grassroots. We have decided to go to our local Sac Gaming Expo on December 10th, 2017 at the Scottish Rite Center.
I have no idea if there will be ANY other indies aside from us but, even if there aren’t, we don’t see this as a bad thing. We see it as a chance to stand out and be unique. We also hope we get the chance to genuinely interact with gamers in our hometown and find out what is important to them…maybe convert them to the “indie way.”
Do I regret not submitting to IGF? I would be lying if I said I wasn’t partly curious of the possibilities if I went. Watching the award show gave me a child-like wonderment of how I would feel if I had a game up for nomination…it is like a kid watching the Academy Awards! But then I come down to Earth after discussing it with Fawn and Tori. They let me know how going there is probably not a good use of our limited funds and how we would be a tiny fish in a huge pond.
I agree so I will not be attending, or even submitting to, IGF this year. I would prefer to support my hometown of Sac and make awareness here first, get used to networking locally, marketing my completed project (“The Mines of Morseph”) and looking ahead to what is next (a secret for now!)
But I do wish all of the 2018 IGF submissions luck in their pursuit of the prizes, the fame, and the success that comes with it. We hope to still obtain success but prefer to be regular folks while doing so.
